Discover how Jio accelerated India’s digital transformation
Pre-Jio Era
Before Jio arrived in 2016, accessing data was costly, with prices ranging from ₹250 to ₹10,000 per GB. This meant that people could only afford limited data, around 240 MB per month, due to high costs. Download speeds were also slow, and India's global data traffic share was less than 1%. Most people at that time mainly used their phones for voice calls and messaging because of these limitations. Many couldn't access data and participate in the digital economy at that time.
The opportunity to transform India and the lives of Indian citizens through digital inclusion was the motivation behind Jio. Jio was thus launched with the intent to provide Indian citizens with the right tools, skills, and digital ecosystem to not just participate in the fourth industrial revolution but also lead it.
